British qualifier Arthur Fery caused an early upset at the Australian Open by defeating Italian 20th seed Flavio Cobolli during the tournament’s opening day. The 23-year-old’s victory marked another significant milestone in his career, replicating a similar high-profile win he achieved last year at Wimbledon against 20th seed Alexei Popyrin. Fery secured the match in straight sets, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 6-1, despite the intense Melbourne heat.
From the outset, Cobolli appeared physically compromised by a stomach issue, visibly struggling throughout the match. After the first set, he left the court for a toilet break, and later took electrolyte tablets supplied by the medical team. His condition clearly worsened in the third set, prompting an additional medical timeout when he fell behind 3-0. Despite these difficulties, Fery maintained his composure and delivered a disciplined performance.
Ranked 185th globally, Fery’s tactical awareness and aggressive play were crucial in exploiting Cobolli’s weakened state. The London-born player, who grew up near the All England Club in Wimbledon, proved adept at maneuvering his opponent across the court. Although Fery’s serve doesn’t pack the same power as some competitors, his groundstrokes, especially his forehands, demonstrated considerable force and precision.
Cobolli’s frustration became evident as his errors increased, including a string of double faults that allowed Fery to gain a commanding 5-1 lead in the third set. Fery then comfortably served out the match to claim his second Grand Slam win and just the third tour-level victory of his career.
