Jon Burrows: UUP leader invited to unity talks by DUP

The Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) has extended an invitation to Jon Burrows, the incoming leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP), to engage in discussions focused on strengthening unionist cooperation. This invitation comes as Burrows, a former police officer, was confirmed as the sole candidate poised to take over leadership from Mike Nesbitt. The call for talks was initiated by DUP leader Gavin Robinson, who expressed a desire to unite unionist parties in order to better promote the union.

In communications sent to DUP members, Robinson emphasized the importance of a united front, stating that working together would enhance unionism’s collective influence and political strength. He warned against division within unionism, pointing out that disunity would likely lead to a loss of seats and diminish their overall impact. Robinson also mentioned that he had formally outlined the DUP’s position in a letter to Burrows, inviting him to meet and discuss potential collaboration.
