Nun jailed for abuse at Nazareth House children's home

A former nun who committed abuse against vulnerable children in Scotland has been sentenced to fifteen months in prison. Carol Buirds, aged 75, was convicted for inflicting unnecessary suffering and injury on children in homes governed by the Catholic Sisters of Nazareth order between 1972 and 1981. Alongside her, another ex-nun, 78-year-old Eileen McElhinney, received a probation order coupled with 240 hours of unpaid work. Additionally, Dorothy Kane, a retired support worker aged 68, was handed 150 hours of community service after their trial concluded at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last month.

The abuse committed by these women spanned a nine-year timeframe from 1972 to 1981. The incidents took place at Nazareth House facilities located in Lasswade, Midlothian, and Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire, as well as at an unspecified address in Dunbar, East Lothian. The survivors’ advocacy group condemned the actions, labeling them as a profound misuse of authority, trust, and power.
