A year ago, Michael Sheen committed his own finances to establish a new national theatre for Wales. Now, as the founding artistic director, he is set to star in the company’s inaugural full production. His goal is for the Welsh National Theatre to become a significant cultural force, not only across Wales but extending its influence throughout the UK and beyond.
Sheen explains that when the opportunity arose to create a fresh national theatre after the previous National Theatre of Wales closed due to funding cuts, he realized he was uniquely positioned to make it happen. “I could kick-start it myself financially, I could pay for things to begin with, I had a profile, I could get media interest, I could open doors in terms of getting people involved,” he says. His standing as one of Wales’s most respected actors coupled with financial capability allowed him to push the vision forward where others might have hesitated.
