The Traitors saved my life, says contestant Amanda Collier

Amanda Collier, a former detective and contestant on the BBC One show *The Traitors*, revealed that the medical screenings conducted before filming uncovered a serious heart condition she had been unaware of. Originally from Bolton and now living in Brighton, Collier, aged 57 and recently retired, was diagnosed with a significant heart disease following a CT scan required prior to her appearance on the show. She explained that this condition runs in her family, and without the thorough health checks imposed by the production team, she might never have discovered the severity of her illness.

During her time on *The Traitors*, Collier, who once served as a senior detective with the Metropolitan Police, was voted out of the castle shortly after confiding her secret role to Rachel Duffy, one of the traitors in the game. She was the seventh participant eliminated in the latest series that airs on BBC One, hosted by Claudia Winkleman. The show pits two groups, the Faithfuls and the Traitors, against each other, with the Faithfuls striving to identify the Traitors before being “murdered” off by them.

In an interview with BBC North West Tonight, Collier described how a heart issue was initially detected after her sister suffered a heart attack in 2019, prompting her to seek medical advice herself. She was placed on statin medication to reduce cholesterol but was required to undergo another CT scan as part of the show’s additional health precautions. She reflected on the progression of her condition over five years, stating, “I have a gene which is causing issues with my heart, but I am now on a course of drugs, I have changed my lifestyle, and it has changed my life.” The cardiologist informed her the situation was quite serious, but she remains hopeful about a long life ahead.

Despite her diagnosis, Collier emphasizes how maintaining physical fitness has always been important to her and how she has adapted her exercise routine since learning about her heart condition. “I would never have noticed it because I keep myself fit and healthy,” she said. While she no longer runs marathons, she stays active through high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and other forms of exercise, making lifestyle adjustments as necessary. Grateful for the awareness the show has brought to her health, she is now involved in volunteering, supporting people with disabilities and dementia by taking them on outings. Passionate about raising awareness, Collier also advocates for the British Heart Foundation, encouraging people to understand that heart disease can affect individuals of any age and does not have to prevent them from living life fully. She described her experience on *The Traitors* as “intense, fun and nerve-wracking” with missions that were “absolutely hilarious.”
