Kemi Badenoch has outlined her strategy to redirect public frustration towards the Labour Party, aiming to strengthen the Conservative position as the sole party prepared to confront the difficult challenges currently facing the UK. In an interview on BBC One’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Badenoch criticized Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer for inadequately funding the armed forces, despite what she described as excessive spending in other areas.
Badenoch also took aim at Reform UK, labeling their approach as “authoritarian” due to their intentions to exert control over key industries, specifically highlighting their policies related to the oil sector and the automotive manufacturer Rolls-Royce. She maintained that the Conservatives are now in a stronger position to challenge the Labour government, as the public has had the opportunity to witness what she called Labour’s harsh and restrictive first 18 months in power.
Speaking on BBC One, Badenoch emphasized that the public has greater clarity about Labour’s actions, which in turn has made it easier for the Conservatives to define their opposition. “It’s clearer what they are doing, so it is clearer what we are opposing,” she said, adding that the Conservative Party has moved beyond mere “reflexive opposition.” Her goal, she explained, is to harness the widespread anger many people feel about the current management of the country.
Reflecting on the party’s previous time in government, Badenoch acknowledged that the Conservatives have learned valuable lessons since losing the 2024 general election. She expressed confidence in the party’s ability to take necessary yet difficult decisions, stating, “We think we’re the only party that’s both competent enough and brave enough to take the tough decisions that will get the country in the right place.”
