Derek Martin, renowned for his role as Charlie Slater in the long-running BBC soap opera EastEnders, has passed away at the age of 92. He first became part of the fictional community of Albert Square in 2000, portraying the widower father to four daughters: Lynne, Kat, Little Mo, and Zoe. Martin remained a regular fixture on the show until 2011, during which time his character was central to numerous significant storylines. He built an impressive portfolio with appearances in popular series such as Doctor Who, Z-Cars, The Sweeney, Eldorado, Law & Order, and Hart to Hart, eventually earning his enduring place with the character of Charlie Slater. His agent described it as “a privilege to be a part of his creative journey” and recalled how Martin treasured his time playing the role.
An EastEnders spokesperson expressed sorrow at Martin’s passing, praising his immediate and lasting impact on viewers as the patriarch of one of the show’s most memorable families.
