Police criticise 'ridiculous' parking by motorists at snowy Eryri

Police in North Wales have urged drivers to refrain from leaving their vehicles in unsafe or inconvenient spots while enjoying the snow-covered landscapes of Snowdonia, the country’s largest national park. Inspector Jason Diamond expressed concern about motorists parking along roadsides in the area, known locally as Eryri, to go for walks or capture photos for social media over the past weekend. He warned that if such “irresponsible behaviour” continues, authorities may resort to seizing the vehicles to ensure safety.

Currently, a yellow weather warning for icy conditions is in effect across much of Wales until midday Saturday, following the disruption caused by Storm Goretti. Mountain rescue teams have also issued cautions regarding the risk of avalanches, particularly in places where paths are near steep slopes, further highlighting the dangers present in the region.

Inspector Diamond acknowledged the appeal of the snowy scenery but stressed the importance of common sense. He said, “Leaving vehicles at edges of snow lined carriageways and pushing others into the paths of oncoming vehicles at best increases the risk of coming back to a damaged vehicle, but at worst, hugely increases the risk of serious personal injury.” While seizing vehicles is an option, he noted it must be carefully managed under these hazardous conditions, emphasizing that safety remains the priority for enforcement efforts.

Local authorities, including council representatives, are also involved in addressing the issue. Councillor Craig ab Iago of Cyngor Gwynedd encouraged visitors to park responsibly, particularly in busy spots like Pen y Pass, and to consider using the Sherpa’r Wyddfa bus service to reduce vehicle congestion. He added, “Our officers will be working with partners from other authorities with the aim of keeping the road clear.” Visitors are reminded to check weather and road conditions before traveling, as the mountainous terrain and changing weather can significantly impact transport availability
