Three individuals have been taken into custody following an incident in Essex where paramedics and off-duty police officers were struck while responding to a collision. The initial crash occurred on the A130 near the Sadlers Farm roundabout in South Benfleet, where two members of the emergency services remain hospitalized with serious injuries.
The sequence of events began around 00:15 GMT when a white Nissan X-Trail was involved in a crash. While emergency personnel were attending this scene, a secondary collision took place involving a white Ford Transit van. This subsequent accident resulted in five emergency crew members being taken to the hospital for treatment.
Police are currently investigating the incident and have urged anyone who witnessed the events or has dashcam footage to come forward. The individuals detained and being questioned by authorities are a 23-year-old man from Canvey, a 29-year-old man from Westcliff, and a 39-year-old man from Canvey. Their suspected offenses include causing serious injury by dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of controlled substances, and operating a vehicle while under the influence of drink or drugs.
Essex Police reported that one paramedic and one police officer remain seriously injured and admitted to hospital. The collisions occurred on the southbound side of the A130, between the Rayleigh Spur and Sadlers Farm roundabouts. During the investigation, the A130 was temporarily closed between Sadlers Farm and Bonville’s Roundabout, affecting access to the A13, but these roads have since reopened. Chief Superintendent Morgan Cronin expressed the force’s support for the injured emergency workers and their families, stating, “The thoughts of everyone at Essex Police is with the emergency workers injured while responding to this incident – both they and their families are being provided with support from the force.
