Saunas and winter swim plans for Hampstead Heath

The City of London Corporation is considering extending the swimming season at Hampstead Heath’s Mixed Pond to allow swimmers access throughout the entire year. This potential change comes as open water swimming gains increasing popularity among the public. Currently, the Mixed Pond operates from April to October, in contrast to the Kenwood Ladies’ Pond and Highgate Men’s Pond, which are open year-round.

At present, during the colder months, only members of the Hampstead Heath Winter Swimming Club are permitted to use the Mixed Pond, a privilege maintained through a long-standing agreement. Alderman Gregory Jones KC, who chairs the Hampstead Heath, Highgate Wood and Queen’s Park Committee, explained that the review was initiated in response to the growing enthusiasm for open water swimming.

In addition to extending access to the Mixed Pond, the corporation is reviewing plans to upgrade the onsite facilities. Proposed improvements include enhanced changing rooms and the addition of saunas for swimmers. Furthermore, the draft business plan puts forward the introduction of temperature sensors that would allow real-time monitoring available online, as well as systems to improve water aeration.

This five-year plan is scheduled for discussion at the upcoming Hampstead Heath Consultative Committee meeting, with final approval anticipated at a separate committee gathering in early February. The initiative aims to align the Mixed Pond’s usage and amenities more closely with those found at Parliament Hill Lido and the other two bathing ponds on Hampstead Heath
