The government has called on the communications regulator, Ofcom, to fully utilize its authority—including the possibility of imposing a ban—against the social media platform X, due to concerns over illegal AI-generated images hosted on the site. Ofcom has the power to seek a court order that could prevent external parties from supporting the Elon Musk-owned platform financially or block access to it within the UK.
This move comes amid criticism surrounding X’s AI feature Grok, which has been used to digitally remove clothing from images of individuals. The government is particularly alarmed by the potential for sexualized images involving children, raising serious concerns over safety and legality.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer addressed the issue directly, condemning the production of sexualized images of both adults and children generated by Grok. He described the situation as “disgraceful” and “disgusting,” emphasizing that it would not be tolerated under any circumstances. In an interview with Greatest Hits Radio, he stated, “Ofcom has our full support to take action in relation to this.” He further noted, “It’s unlawful. We’re not going to tolerate it. I’ve asked for all options to be on the table.”
Sources within the government reassured BBC News that Ofcom is expected to employ all available powers concerning the situation with Grok and X. Typically, Ofcom’s regulatory powers under the Online Safety Act, which include the ability to request a High Court order to shut down offending companies by cutting off their technological access and funding, are rarely invoked. However, in cases involving significant harm, risks to children, or repeated non-compliance, this process can be expedited.
