A 60-year-old man has admitted to sending abusive messages via social media to England footballer Jess Carter. Nigel Dewale directed the offensive communications to Carter’s TikTok account during last summer’s UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 tournament, where the Lionesses successfully defended their title. The posts contained racist slurs, including harmful stereotypes targeting Carter’s race, and made defamatory claims suggesting that individuals with brown skin were “murderers” and “groomers.”
Dewale, who lives in Great Harwood, Lancashire, appeared at Blackburn Magistrates’ Court on Friday and pleaded guilty to sending a malicious message over a public communications network between June 19 and June 23 of the previous year. In addition to this, he admitted to possessing an offensive weapon—an extendable baton—in a private location in February. The court postponed sentencing until March 25 to allow for pre-sentence reports and cautioned Dewale that all sentencing options, including imprisonment, remained possible.
Jess Carter, a 28-year-old central defender originally from Warwick, has played club football for Gotham FC in the National Women’s Soccer League in the United States, having formerly been part of Chelsea and Birmingham City in England. Following the racist abuse she faced online throughout the tournament, Carter publicly announced she would be taking a step back from social media. Lancashire Police revealed that the UK Football Policing Unit initiated an investigation in July, which led to Dewale being identified and subsequently arrested in August.
Mark Roberts, Chief Constable for Cheshire Police and national lead for football policing, condemned Dewale’s comments as “totally abhorrent,” emphasizing the emotional harm caused to Carter and her family. Roberts welcomed Dewale’s guilty plea and affirmed a zero-tolerance approach to hate crimes, whether conducted online or offline. He stressed that individuals cannot use social media profiles to anonymously spread hate or make vile remarks without facing consequences. Dewale was granted unconditional bail following the hearing
