Man admits attempted murder of soldier near Chatham army barracks

A man has admitted to attempting to murder an Army officer in a stabbing incident outside a military barracks in Kent. Anthony Esan, aged 25, pleaded guilty to the charge involving Lieutenant Colonel Mark Teeton, who was repeatedly stabbed at Sally Port Gardens near Brompton Barracks in Chatham on 23 July 2024. Following the attack, Esan was apprehended near his residence in Rochester approximately 25 minutes later.

The legal proceedings faced multiple delays due to concerns over Esan’s mental health and his ability to stand trial. During a recent hearing at Maidstone Crown Court, Esan appeared via video link from Broadmoor Hospital and additionally confessed to possessing two bladed weapons.
