The Princess of Wales made an unexpected appearance alongside the Prince of Wales during a visit to London, demonstrating their support for NHS workers just a day before her birthday. Initially, Prince William was scheduled to attend the event solo, but Catherine joined him at Charing Cross Hospital for what marked their first public engagement of 2026. Kensington Palace explained that the princess, who will turn 44 on Friday, wished to stand with her husband in expressing gratitude to the hospital teams for their dedication throughout a challenging winter period. This visit also came shortly before the anniversary of her cancer remission announcement earlier in 2025.
During their time at the hospital, the royal couple connected with volunteers from the Imperial Health Charity, an organization committed to enhancing patient care and easing the workload of healthcare professionals. One volunteer, who supports individuals undergoing chemotherapy, spoke about the demands of her role. She remarked to William and Catherine, “People will sit there for hours.” Catherine responded with empathy, saying, “I know,” before turning to her husband and adding, “you know.” The princess’s last public appearance had been on Christmas Day, when she joined William, their children, and other members of the royal family for the traditional walk to church at Sandringham in Norfolk.
William and Catherine, both joint patrons of NHS Charities Together, visited NHS staff during their tea break, engaging in conversations about the difficulties faced during the particularly tough winter virus season. The gathering took place in a break room funded by Imperial Health Charity, which is affiliated with NHS Charities Together and supports all five hospitals within the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust through grants, arts initiatives, and volunteer efforts. The visit was intended to recognize the outstanding contributions of NHS personnel during an exceptionally demanding time.
Following their interaction with frontline workers, the royal couple participated in a roundtable meeting with chief executives, trustees, policymakers, and philanthropists involved with NHS charities to discuss the importance of philanthropy in supporting the health service. William and Catherine took on their roles as patrons of NHS Charities Together in 2020, amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
