Manchester United caretaker manager: Talks held with Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United have initiated early discussions with several former players, including Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, regarding the possibility of serving as caretaker manager for the remainder of the season. These conversations are in their initial phase, with no clear frontrunner yet identified to succeed Ruben Amorim during this transitional period. However, sources from BBC Sport suggest that Carrick is among the serious contenders for the interim position.

Following Amorim’s dismissal on Monday after a challenging 14-month tenure, Darren Fletcher has been appointed as the interim manager. He will oversee the team until the club secures a temporary replacement, while plans to appoint a permanent manager remain scheduled for the summer. Football director Jason Wilcox has been in contact not only with Fletcher but also with Solskjaer and Carrick about taking on the caretaker role. In addition, Ruud van Nistelrooy, another former United player, is also considered a potential candidate. Van Nistelrooy enjoyed a brief but successful stint managing the team as caretaker earlier in 2024, claiming three wins and a draw from four matches.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer first stepped into a caretaker role when he replaced Jose Mourinho after Mourinho’s sacking in 2018. Solskjaer later secured the full-time managerial position, holding it for three years until his departure in 2021. Meanwhile, Carrick has been out of work since leaving his role with Middlesbrough last June. Other candidates in the running for the permanent managerial position include Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Roberto de Zerbi, the former Brighton manager now at Marseille. Glasner, who guided Palace to an FA Cup victory last season, dismissed speculation about the United role during a recent press conference, stating, “I am Crystal Palace manager and it makes no sense for you to ask me any more questions about it.”

In the meantime, Fletcher addressed the media ahead of United’s upcoming match against Burnley, where he emphasized his full focus on the game. “It’s surreal, it’s an amazing honour to be able to lead a Manchester United team,” he said. “I didn’t think in my wildest dreams that was something that could happen. It’s all happened so quickly, all my concentration and efforts are going on Burnley. Everyone expects Manchester United to be on top and winning – that’s what we have to achieve and I will do my best in whatever role to make that happen.”
