Martin Clunes, best known for his role in Doc Martin, is set to take on the role of former BBC presenter Huw Edwards in an upcoming drama. The production, currently titled Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards, is a two-part factual series that explores how Edwards, once one of the most familiar faces on British television, became embroiled in a major scandal that led to a suspended jail sentence.
Huw Edwards began his broadcasting career in Wales and rose through the ranks to become one of the BBC’s highest-paid newsreaders. Over several decades, he presented the BBC’s News at Ten and covered some of the most significant events in recent British history, including the announcement of Queen Elizabeth II’s death. However, his reputation was shattered in July 2024 when he pleaded guilty to charges related to possessing indecent images of children.
The series will air on Channel 5 and aims to detail the events surrounding the scandal. It will include interviews with those who originally brought the story to light. Ben Frow, the chief content officer at Channel 5, commented: “This is an important and shocking story of how a man in a position of power and trust betrayed that status. By gaining exclusive access to the key individuals involved and those who investigated the story, we explore the human cost behind the headlines.”
Edwards’ fall from grace began in July 2023 when The Sun reported that a “top BBC Star” had paid a teenager for sexual pictures. Soon after, his wife publicly identified him as the individual involved, and Edwards resigned in April. Following a Metropolitan Police probe, he faced three charges in June 2024 related to making indecent images of children, specifically linked to WhatsApp communications with a man named Alex Williams. Edwards admitted to the offenses a month later, acknowledging possession of 41 inappropriate photographs on WhatsApp, including seven considered the most serious. He received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and was placed on the sex offenders’ register for seven years. The upcoming series will be directed by Michael Samuels, who has previously helmed acclaimed British dramas such as The Windermere Children and Any Human Heart
