Withernsea sea hero Mark Ratcliffe could get posthumous award

A tragic incident occurred off the coast of East Yorkshire involving a desperate rescue attempt that has resulted in multiple fatalities. Mark Ratcliffe, a 67-year-old grandfather from Withernsea, entered the rough sea at Withernsea on Friday in a courageous effort to save Sarah Keeling, aged 45, and her 15-year-old daughter Grace Keeling, who were both in danger in the heavy waters. Unfortunately, Mark was pulled unconscious from the sea during this initial rescue attempt and died at the scene. Later that evening, Sarah’s body was recovered, but the search for Grace continues.

In response to the tragedy, Humberside Police provided further information, and James Dick OBE, the King’s representative for East Riding of Yorkshire, expressed his intent to formally recognize Mark Ratcliffe’s bravery. “I am investigating the most appropriate way to recognise Mark Ratcliffe’s selfless act of bravery,” he stated, reflecting on the bravery demonstrated by a man who put himself at great personal risk in an attempt to save others.

James Dick, serving as the lord-lieutenant for the county, also offered his condolences for the loss of three lives. “It is a very tragic situation where three people have lost their lives,” he said, extending sympathies to the families affected and the local community of Withernsea, which is mourning deeply. His office is currently consulting with those involved in the awards process to determine the most fitting accolade for Mark’s actions.

Additional details about the circumstances of the incident were provided by Chief Inspector Tom Stevens. Reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses revealed that Grace was swept into the sea after falling near the rocks, prompting her mother and three bystanders—including Mark Ratcliffe—to enter the water in an immediate rescue attempt. While two of the rescuers were able to get out safely, both Mark and Sarah sadly lost their lives. Stevens affirmed that locating Grace remains the priority, with authorities conducting extensive shoreline and drone searches, consulting experts, and utilizing underwater search teams to aid in their efforts. Support continues to be offered to both families as the search and investigation proceed
