Corriedale cast became 'one big family' while filming episode

Julia Goulding, known for her role as Shona Platt on Coronation Street, expressed that filming a special crossover episode with the Emmerdale cast felt like one unified family. This unique event, titled “Corriedale,” merges the two popular soap operas by bringing together characters from Weatherfield and their Yorkshire counterparts. The storyline revolves around a tragic collision on the M62 motorway, where the worlds of both soaps intersect dramatically.

The hour-long special, scheduled to air on ITV1 at 8 pm GMT after months of meticulous preparation, features Goulding’s character playing a pivotal part in the aftermath of a minibus crashing into a car between Leeds and Manchester. Goulding shared that much of her filming involved night shoots lasting about three weeks, during which she had to spend a lot of time lying on the floor. Despite the challenges, especially being visibly pregnant at the time, she described the experience as immensely enjoyable.

Isabel Hodgins from Emmerdale, who portrays Victoria Sugden, also reflected on the production, calling her involvement “surreal” and saying they all felt privileged to take part. Viewers had an additional interactive element during the broadcast, as they could influence the show’s sequence by voting on one of four pre-recorded scenes via social media up until 15 minutes before the episode aired, adding a unique twist to the viewing experience.

Iain MacLeod, the executive producer who oversees both Emmerdale and Coronation Street, explained that his dual roles allowed him to conceive this “Marvel”-style crossover inspired by his own frustrations with traffic jams on the M62. He envisioned the motorway as a natural link between the two fictional settings, forcing disparate groups of characters into the same space. MacLeod described the special as a blend of drama, humor, and heartfelt moments, expressing excitement for its reception while clarifying that there are no plans for a permanent merger of the two shows
