Wales snow prompts 'don't travel' warning with more expected

Across several regions of Wales, hazardous conditions caused by snowfall have led to serious travel advisories. Residents are being urged to avoid all but essential journeys due to dangerous road conditions. A weather warning has been issued for areas including Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Conwy, Gwynedd, Pembrokeshire, and Powys, where snow accumulations may reach up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) through to 11:00 GMT on Sunday.

Further extending into Sunday afternoon and lasting until noon on Monday, the Met Office has forecast additional snowfall, with up to 3 centimeters (1.2 inches) expected in some locations and as much as 8 centimeters (3.1 inches) on elevated terrain. Overnight, the region is likely to experience increasingly wintry showers, compounding existing difficulties. Due to these conditions, North Wales Police have advised against travel in parts of the area, particularly affecting the A55 road through Gwynedd and Anglesey. Public transport has also been disrupted, with bus services suspended in some places.

Gwynfor Coaches, serving routes in Anglesey, Caernarfon, Llanberis, and Snowdonia, reported suspending certain services because rural roads were described as “completely unsafe” and drivers were unable to operate effectively. North Wales Police, via a Facebook post, highlighted ongoing “issues in relation to the current weather conditions” impacting sections of the A55 west of Abergwyngregyn in Gwynedd and the Felinheli bypass. The police emphasized the importance of avoiding travel unless absolutely necessary. Additionally, Traffic Wales noted multiple road disruptions caused by the severe weather, prompting Newport County to postpone their scheduled Sunday League Two football match against Tranmere Rovers because their pitch was deemed unplayable.

The Met Office outlined that western parts of Wales would experience heavy snow showers on Sunday morning, resulting in 2 to 4 centimeters of snow within a couple of hours, with isolated areas possibly seeing accumulations as high as 10 centimeters during the morning period. Alongside snowfall warnings, an ice warning covers a large portion of Wales until midday Sunday. A separate alert for snow and ice extends from Sunday through to Monday afternoon across most of Wales, excluding Anglesey, highlighting ongoing risks to those in these regions
