Man who died after Withernsea sea rescue named

A tragic incident unfolded in East Yorkshire when Mark Ratcliffe, aged 67, lost his life while attempting to rescue two people from the sea. According to Humberside Police, Mr Ratcliffe was pulled from the water unconscious at Withernsea on Friday and subsequently died at the scene. Alongside him, the body of a 45-year-old woman was also recovered later that evening, while the search continues for one person who remains missing.

Mark Ratcliffe’s family paid tribute to him, describing him as “a true selfless hero with a heart of gold, who was so cruelly taken trying to save others.” They expressed their grief, emphasizing how deeply he was loved and the profound void his passing has left. “A loving husband, father, son, brother and the best grandad anybody could ever wish for. Sleep tight, we love you, we miss you,” they said, highlighting the immense loss felt by all who knew him.

In a heartfelt message posted on Facebook, Mr Ratcliffe’s son extended his gratitude to the RNLI, HM Coastguard, and emergency services for their tireless efforts amid challenging weather. “Bye Dad, I miss you and I will never forget the true hero and role model you were,” he wrote, underscoring the profound respect and admiration held for his father’s bravery.

The rescue operation began around 15:10 GMT on Friday after reports emerged of several people in distress in the water. Eyewitnesses recounted seeing multiple individuals rushing into the sea to save a young woman who had fallen in. The extensive search involved around 100 emergency personnel, including rescue helicopters, an air ambulance, and RNLI teams from Withernsea, Bridlington, and Hornsea Inshore Rescue. Although the search paused overnight, it resumed at dawn and was eventually called off at 16:00 the following day. Community members have since gathered to lay floral tributes at the promenade and attended services at Withernsea Methodist Church to honor those who lost their lives in the tragedy
