Man arrested following fatal A120 Coggeshall crash

A man in his 40s from the Colchester area has been arrested following a fatal multi-vehicle collision on the A120 in Essex that resulted in the death of a man in his 50s. The incident occurred at 07:00 GMT on Saturday on the Colchester-bound carriageway near Coggeshall, between West Street and Colne Road. The arrested individual was taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failing to stop after the collision. He has since been released under investigation.

Essex Police’s roads policing unit is conducting a detailed and careful investigation. Insp James Freeman emphasized the need to avoid speculation, stating, “This is a meticulous investigation which requires great care and attention and we’re continuing to work through a number of lines of enquiry.” He further stressed, “Whilst I can confirm a man has been arrested, I would ask that the wider public refrain from speculation; an arrest does not imply guilt and the man in custody is continuing to provide an account to us.”

The deceased man’s family has been informed and is receiving support from police officers. Authorities reported that just before the crash, they received a call at 06:50 about a vulnerable man with grey hair and wearing dark clothes walking alone on the A120 towards Colchester. This description matches the victim. Additionally, a white van was discovered with substantial fire damage in a layby on the Braintree-bound carriageway, close to Watery Lane near Bradwell.

Essex Police have appealed to anyone who was on the A120 between Bradwell, Coggeshall, and Colchester from 06:30 to 07:10 on Saturday and may have seen the man or witnessed the van being set on fire or accessed, to come forward. The A120 road was closed for several hours but was reopened at approximately 17:25 on Saturday, according to the traffic-monitoring service Inrix
