Dog rescued from 'filthy house' in Northallerton adopted by her vet

A springer spaniel named Floss, rescued from deplorable living conditions described by an RSPCA inspector as one of the worst in her career, is now thriving in a loving home. Floss was found severely underweight and infested with fleas at a property in Northallerton, where authorities also discovered a deceased dog. Shannon Hamilton, the veterinarian who cared for Floss after her rescue, felt an immediate bond with the dog and decided to foster and eventually adopt her.

The RSPCA team, including Inspector Emma Stainthorpe and Chief Inspector Mark Gent, responded to a cruelty report which led them to the scene. They encountered a residence in extremely poor condition and uncovered the decomposing body of a Mastiff inside one of the rooms. Inspector Stainthorpe recounted the overwhelming filth and smell, emphasizing the severity by stating the team had to wear protective gear such as disposable overalls, gloves, and masks. She called the experience “one of the worst jobs” she had handled in her thirteen years on the job.

On the way to the veterinary clinic, there were serious concerns about her survival as she was malnourished, dehydrated, and heavily infested with fleas. At the clinic, Floss was diagnosed with anemia, likely caused by her dire condition. Shannon Hamilton described her first encounter with Floss, recalling her “lovely face and big puppy-dog eyes looking scared.” This connection inspired Hamilton to foster the dog.

Floss, believed to be around seven years old, has since adapted well to her new home. Hamilton described her as a “sweet-natured girl” who brings joy and energy to the household. Despite her traumatic past, Floss is social, enjoying the company of people and other dogs without fear. Hamilton said, “She is our little girl and we love her to bits, and can’t imagine the house without her in it,” highlighting the deep bond they now share
