After spending over 1,000 days at an animal sanctuary, a rescue greyhound named Bobby has finally found a new home after being frequently passed over by potential adopters. Bobby arrived at the Woodside Animal Welfare Trust in Plymouth in February 2023 and had spent a significant amount of time at the sanctuary without being adopted.
The staff at Woodside expressed concerns that Bobby might have to endure yet another year in the kennel after having already been there for 1,064 days. Fortunately, Bobby’s luck changed when he met Peter Hart, an experienced dog owner, and the two quickly bonded. Bobby was welcomed into his new home on a Tuesday, bringing joy to both the dog and his new family.
Peter Hart shared that he immediately wanted to give Bobby a home after seeing a photo of the six-year-old dog. “When I found out he’d been here for three years I couldn’t believe it, that’s a long time for a dog to be in kennels,” he commented. Upon meeting Bobby in person, Peter recalled, “I came up to meet Bobby and we seemed to get on alright. We went and sat in his kennel… it took him a few minutes and then he jumped up on the couch and flumped on me.”
The trust highlighted several reasons why Bobby had struggled to find a home over the years. Factors such as his color, his age, and misconceptions surrounding greyhounds needing extensive exercise influenced potential adopters. Additionally, Bobby’s reluctance to share his toys may have played a role. Debbie Haynes, a senior manager at the sanctuary, described Bobby’s adoption as “the happiest news staff could have wished for before the New Year,” sharing her delight: “We are over-the-moon. We’ve been waiting such a long time for Bobby to find a wonderful home and we are so delighted that he finally has.
