Carolyn Harris, the Labour MP for Neath and Swansea East, has experienced a dramatic weight loss of nearly 10 stone after starting treatment with the slimming drug Mounjaro in October 2024. Having faced mobility difficulties, Harris made the decision to pursue this regulated medical treatment, resulting in her dropping from a size 24 to a size 10. Despite the success, she has expressed concerns about the dangers of unregulated weight-loss injections, warning that people obtaining these drugs outside of medical supervision could be risking their lives.
The MP revealed that her struggles with mobility reached a peak during a walk around a lake in Swansea to mark International Menopause Day, where she had to stop a quarter of the way due to difficulty moving. Alongside health motivations, Harris stated that relentless online criticism about her appearance also affected her deeply. “How I looked or what I was wearing had become more important than my politics,” she told BBC Radio Wales Breakfast, adding, “I can be bolshie if I’m fighting for a cause or for someone else, but deep down I’m very sensitive.”
Harris emphasized the importance of seeking appropriate medical advice before using weight-loss drugs, cautioning others to avoid obtaining injections through unofficial or unsafe channels. The National Pharmacy Association has recently raised alarms about the growing demand for medications such as Mounjaro and Ozempic, and the fact that some people are turning to beauty salons or social media platforms to acquire these products, which bypasses proper medical oversight.
Regulatory frameworks differ across the UK, with England requiring all prescribers of weight-loss injections to be registered with the Care Quality Commission. However, in Wales, only doctors must register with Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW), leaving other healthcare providers outside routine inspection and potentially exposing patients to risks. Harris expressed her fears about this lack of consistent regulation, saying, “They don’t know what they might be injecting into themselves and that terrifies me.” In response, the Welsh government acknowledged the significant demand for weight management medications and reported ongoing efforts to establish a sustainable model that expands access while providing support to maintain weight loss, prioritizing those with urgent clinical needs in the meantime
