A coroner has issued a stark warning about the potential for more infant deaths if government regulation is not introduced for non-therapeutic male circumcision. This follows the tragic passing of a six-month-old baby boy in west London. Non-therapeutic circumcision refers to the removal of the foreskin of male infants and young children for religious or cultural reasons, rather than for medical necessity.
The boy, Mohamed Abdisamad, underwent circumcision on 12 February 2023. The procedure was performed by a circumciser who had been recommended to Mohamed’s parents and was specifically requested by them. According to the West London Coroner’s report, Mohamed started to exhibit signs of illness three to four days after the circumcision. He was subsequently admitted to hospital on 19 February but sadly died later that same day.
Upon arrival at Hillingdon Hospital via ambulance, Mohamed experienced cardiorespiratory arrest and was pronounced dead at 23:55 GMT. An inquest jury, concluding on 8 October 2025, determined that the cause of death was an “invasive streptococcus pyogenes infection following male circumcision.” Following the inquest, Assistant Coroner Anton van Dellen authored a report aimed at preventing future fatalities, highlighting significant concerns regarding the lack of safety protocols and regulation for non-therapeutic male circumcision.
In the December 28, 2025 report, Dr. van Dellen expressed serious apprehension about existing conditions: “During the inquest, the evidence revealed matters giving rise to concern,” he wrote, adding, “In my opinion there is a risk that future deaths could occur unless action is taken.” The coroner pointed out that no national regulations exist to govern non-therapeutic male circumcisions.
