Heart health: Passerby lifesaver urges tradesmen to carry defibrillators

Dale Lee, an electrician, found himself the unexpected hero after rescuing a man who collapsed from cardiac arrest on Bedford Street. About six months prior, Dale had started carrying a mobile defibrillator in his work van, following an advanced first aid course. On this particular day, his quick thinking and the use of the device proved lifesaving. The man he saved, Jonathan Burns, had suffered a cardiac arrest while walking home from work, and Dale’s intervention was crucial in stabilizing him until paramedics arrived.

Jonathan had been experiencing back, chest, and arm pain along with nausea earlier that day but mistakenly attributed these symptoms to a cold. He admitted, “I very foolishly put it down to coming down with a cold and completely ignored the symptoms.” Later in the afternoon, the pain escalated, and Jonathan collapsed in the street. It was then that Dale saw him lying on the pavement and immediately checked for a heartbeat. Using the defibrillator, Dale followed the voice prompts, performing chest compressions and rescue breaths as instructed by the device. When the paramedics arrived, they confirmed to Dale that his actions had saved Jonathan’s life.

The connection between the two men was solidified when the attending paramedic placed Dale’s business card into Jonathan’s bag. After a hospital stay during which Jonathan had a stent fitted, he reached out to Dale to express his gratitude, leading them to discover that they were actually neighbors. Reflecting on the experience Jonathan said, “I’m very lucky to be alive. If I had stayed longer in work we would have missed each other and I would have been dead. It’s one of those what if scenarios where I sort of think: ‘Boy am I lucky!'” Dale, meanwhile, encourages other tradespeople to carry defibrillators too, highlighting that being frequently present in people’s homes puts them in an ideal position to help during emergencies.

The British Heart Foundation emphasizes that defibrillators are designed to be used by anyone, even those without medical training, as they provide clear voice instructions and assess the heart rhythm to determine if a shock is necessary. Dale admitted he was initially worried after the incident but felt a “lot of relief” when the paramedic called to confirm Jonathan’s stable condition. This story underlines the importance of recognizing heart attack symptoms — such as chest pain, pain radiating to other parts of the body, dizziness, sweating, and nausea — and knowing that quick intervention with a defibrillator can significantly improve chances of survival in cardiac emergencies
