In 2025, the UK music scene was once again dominated by Taylor Swift, whose twelfth studio album, *The Life of a Showgirl*, emerged as the top-selling record of the year. Released in October, the album moved an impressive 642,000 copies, securing Swift’s position at the forefront of the industry. The success of female artists was especially notable throughout the year, with emerging British talents such as Olivia Dean and Lola Young playing significant roles in propelling the music market to new heights. Overall, combined sales of albums and streams rose by nearly 5%, reaching a total of 201 million units sold or streamed.
An unexpected comeback was witnessed in the form of Oasis, whose reunion tour proved wildly successful, selling over 1.4 million tickets. Their greatest hits album, *Time Flies*, ranked as the fourth best-selling album in 2025, while their classic record, *(What’s The Story) Morning Glory*, claimed the seventh spot on the year’s sales chart. This resurgence highlighted the enduring appeal of the band and marked a remarkable event in the year’s musical landscape.
The year also stood out as a breakthrough period for new female artists in the UK. Lola Young notably secured the second-highest single of the year with her track *Messy*. Meanwhile, Olivia Dean achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first British woman to simultaneously score her first number one single (*Man I Need*) and album (*The Art of Loving*) in the same week. Reflecting on the emotional resonance of her work, Dean explained, “I wanted it to feel just like a hug – comforting,” noting her intent to create something warm and intimate. Her remarkable year also included four top 10 hits concurrently and a planned appearance on *Jools Holland’s Hootenanny*.
Other notable talents making strides included confessional singer-songwriters Skye Newman and Sienna Spiro, alongside artists such as Raye, PinkPantheress, and Wet Leg, who sustained their international momentum. Female artists dominated the singles chart, accounting for two-thirds of the number one hits. Former Little Mix member Jade also set a record for the biggest opening week sales for a debut album with her acclaimed release *That’s Showbiz, Baby!*.
Meanwhile, vinyl sales continued a steady upward trajectory, increasing by 13% to reach 7.6 million units—marking 18 consecutive years of growth. Taylor Swift’s *The Life of a Showgirl* was the top vinyl seller, and she also placed another album, *Lover (Live From Paris)*, in the top 10 despite its limited 72-hour availability. This album made history by becoming the first to reach number one on pure sales alone in eight years, with no streaming figures contributing. Vinyl sales have doubled over the past decade and are closing in on CD sales, which sold 9.7 million units in 2025, down from 47.3 million a decade earlier. Cassettes, although a niche format, also experienced a notable surge of 53.8%, totaling 164,491 units sold, with the *Better Man* biopic soundtrack unexpectedly topping cassette sales.
The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) highlighted the global success of emerging UK artists throughout the year. Both Olivia Dean and Lola Young earned US Billboard chart placements and received nominations for best new artist at the approaching Grammy Awards. Rock bands such as Yungblud, Sleep Token, Wolf Alice, and Florence + The Machine also gained international recognition. Additionally, Ed Sheeran achieved a rare milestone by topping India’s Spotify charts with his single *Sapphire*, a feat not seen since 2021 by an overseas artist. Dr. Jo Twist, CEO of the BPI, praised these accomplishments amid an increasingly competitive market, emphasizing the UK’s status as the world’s second-largest music exporter. She also noted the challenges posed by the vast availability of global music through streaming, stressing the need for continued governmental support to sustain the country’s thriving music ecosystem
