As the new year of 2026 commences, Smokefree Liverpool is urging smokers to prioritise quitting as their leading resolution. Giving up smoking offers considerable advantages not only for personal health but also for financial savings and overall future wellbeing.
Smoking continues to be the foremost preventable cause of illness and premature death. However, the positive effects of quitting start almost immediately. Within just minutes of stopping, the body begins its healing process. Over the course of weeks, individuals typically notice improvements in breathing and increased energy, while within a year, the likelihood of heart disease decreases by half.
The economic impact of quitting smoking is significant as well. In England, an average smoker spends approximately £2,338 annually on tobacco products. By quitting now, individuals could reclaim that money by the following Christmas—funds that could be redirected toward meaningful experiences like family vacations or home improvements.
To support those ready to make the change, Smokefree Liverpool offers expert, free assistance including one-on-one guidance, access to stop-smoking medications, and the Swap to Stop programme, which provides eligible smokers with free e-cigarette starter kits. Smokers who register with Smokefree Liverpool between 1 January and 13 February and successfully quit for four weeks with validation will be entered into a prize draw for a £60 Love2Shop voucher, offering additional motivation to begin the year on a positive note.
Among the success stories shared is that of Hesh, who decided to quit after his GP’s advice. He stated, “I decided to quit smoking because of the harm it was causing to my health and my mood… Initially I started with the gum, which didn’t work for me, my advisor recommended using a vape.” After five months, Hesh reports an 80% reduction in his smoking-related symptoms, improved wellbeing, and considerable financial savings. He also plans to join another programme in the future to quit vaping gradually, remarking, “one day at a time!”
This example highlights how effective support can lead to lasting change. For those prepared to begin their quitting journey, Smokefree Liverpool can be contacted via their website, by texting QUIT1 to 61825, or calling 0151 374 2535. As Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Public Health, expressed, “The New Year is the perfect time to reset and start enjoying the benefits of a smokefree life. Quitting now means better health and more money for the things that really matter.” Liverpool’s Director of Public Health, Professor Matt Ashton, further encourages persistence: “It can take many smokers up to 30 tries before they quit for good. Our advice is simple: never give up on giving up. Every attempt gets you closer to success.”
