Authorities report that a small aircraft has gone down into a reservoir. Essex Police responded shortly after 14:00 GMT on Sunday following notifications that the plane had entered the water at Hanningfield Reservoir, located near Chelmsford.
As of Monday, officers continue to secure the scene of what has been described as a serious incident. Details regarding any casualties have not been made public. At the reservoir, members of the community have placed flowers on a nearby fence as a mark of respect.
Chief Superintendent Waheed Khan stated, “We are still in the early stages of our investigation and are working closely with the Air Accident Investigation Branch (AAIB) to establish what has happened.” He also encouraged those who may have any information, including CCTV or dash cam footage, to come forward. Meanwhile, the public has been advised to stay clear of the area.
An AAIB representative confirmed that an official investigation has commenced following the aircraft accident at Hanningfield Reservoir. A multidisciplinary team of inspectors has been dispatched to the location. Additionally, a spokesperson for the Essex Wildlife Trust, which oversees a nature reserve at the site, noted that its visitor centre would remain closed on Monday. The reservoir itself, spanning 870 acres (352 hectares), is situated between Chelmsford, Billericay, and Wickford and is managed by Essex and Suffolk Water
