Tyrone: Man killed in Cookstown road crash

A fatal road accident occurred in Cookstown, County Tyrone, resulting in the death of a young man. The collision took place on the Drum Road on Friday, involving multiple vehicles. The deceased has been identified as 20-year-old Pádraig McDonald, who lived in the Loughmacrory area.

According to police reports, the crash involved two Volkswagens—a silver Golf and a black Golf—followed shortly by a collision with a black Vauxhall Corsa. Five individuals were inside the silver Volkswagen Golf at the time of the incident. While several of them sustained injuries, Pádraig McDonald later succumbed to his injuries in hospital. In addition, two other teenage boys who were also involved suffered serious harm: one with life-altering injuries and another with significant facial wounds. Fortunately, the other occupants of the vehicles are not believed to have suffered serious injuries.

Chief Inspector Simpson of the collision investigation unit provided further details, explaining that the first report of the two-vehicle crash came in just before 12:40 am. He confirmed the involvement of the three cars mentioned and noted that although the black Golf and the Vauxhall Corsa occupants escaped serious injury, the situation for the passengers of the silver Golf was far more severe. “A boy aged in his late teens has sustained life-changing injuries, while a second boy in his late teens suffered serious facial injuries,” Simpson stated.

Expressing sorrow over the tragedy, Sinn Féin MP for West Tyrone, Órfhlaith Begley, called the news “devastating.” Begley remarked on the deep impact the incident has had on the local community, saying, “An entire community and parish is heartbroken and in mourning, and I know that we will all do everything that we can to support these families in what will be difficult days to come.” She extended her condolences to the McDonald family and offered thoughts and prayers to those injured, hoping for their full recovery
