Manjula Sood, who made history as the United Kingdom’s first female Asian lord mayor, has passed away at the age of 80. Remembered as “an inspiration” and a devoted community leader, Ms Sood served Leicester in various capacities, including as assistant mayor and as a Labour councillor representing the Stoneygate ward. Originally from India, Ms Sood relocated to Leicester in 1970 while pursuing her PhD studies. After completing her academic work, she dedicated around two decades to teaching at the primary school level. Her entry into politics came through a by-election in 1996, which arose following the death of her husband, Paul. She recalled: “I told my husband ‘I’m not staying here’,” though her grandfather encouraged her to embrace her new life, reminding her that “Leicester is your home and Britain is your country.” Community leaders such as Suleman Nagdi of the Federation of Muslim Organisations praised her as “a shining light—a woman of extraordinary compassion, dignity, and unwavering dedication” whose loss leaves a profound void.
Her website’s biography recounts the challenges Ms Sood balanced early in her career, including learning the ropes of politics while raising two children and caring for her elderly mother. During her year as lord mayor, she was honored with an MBE and received an honorary doctorate of laws from the University of Leicester.
