Royal Family gather for Christmas Day service at Sandringham

King Charles and Queen Camilla participated in a Christmas Day service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, accompanied by the Prince and Princess of Wales along with other members of the royal family. Many well-wishers gathered outside the Norfolk church, eager to see the royal family during this annual event. Prince William and Catherine attended with their three children: Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

Notably absent was Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew. However, his daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, were present, each accompanied by their spouses. The Princess Royal and her daughter Zara Tindall, together with her family, and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, were also attendees. The Christmas morning service remains an important occasion on the royal calendar, drawing crowds and media coverage as the family appears publicly together.

The gathering at Sandringham is steeped in tradition, with attendees from across the UK, Europe, and the United States arriving as early as 9 PM on Christmas Eve to witness the event. At around 11 AM, the royals arrived and were welcomed by Reverend Canon Dr Paul Rhys Williams. While the service took place inside the church, it was broadcast via speakers to those waiting outside. Following the service, the royals traditionally spend the rest of Christmas Day at the Sandringham estate, a customary family meeting place since 1988.

In addition to the church service, this Christmas season includes King Charles’s traditional Christmas message, recorded this year at Westminster Abbey. The King, who recently shared positive news about his response to cancer treatment, is expected to reflect on the “pilgrimage” of life and its lessons in his broadcast scheduled for 3 PM on Christmas Day. Meanwhile, a pre-recorded piano duet performed by Catherine and Princess Charlotte from Windsor Castle was broadcast on Christmas Eve as part of a carol concert, showcasing a piece by Scottish composer Erland Cooper.

Although Prince Andrew did not attend the service, his daughters were present. Earlier this year, King Charles removed Andrew’s royal titles amid ongoing scrutiny related to his past association with Jeffrey Epstein. A recent release of photographs linked to the Epstein files brought renewed attention, although appearing in these files does not indicate any criminal activity. Buckingham Palace has also confirmed that Andrew will relocate from Royal Lodge in Windsor to a residence on the privately owned Sandringham estate in the New Year
