Catherine and Charlotte perform Christmas carol service piano duet

The Princess of Wales and her daughter, Princess Charlotte, collaborated on a piano duet for a Christmas carol service recently held at Westminster Abbey. Although they did not attend the Together at Christmas event in person, their rendition was pre-recorded at Windsor Castle and broadcast on ITV1 during the Christmas Eve program. This special performance featured a piece composed by Scottish musician Erland Cooper.

Kensington Palace had offered a teaser of the duet before the event, sharing a video captioned “a special duet…” showing Catherine alongside a mystery partner playing the piano. The revealed partner was Princess Charlotte, and the two were filmed sitting side-by-side at the piano in Windsor Castle’s Inner Hall. Catherine played with her left hand while Charlotte used her right to perform “Holm Sound,” a piece they are familiar with and enjoy playing together at home. During their performance, viewers were shown footage of guests arriving at the carol service, including the Prince of Wales and Catherine watching their children attach paper chains bearing their names onto a “Connection Tree” outside the abbey.

This was not Catherine’s first piano involvement at a carol service. In 2021, she surprised many by accompanying singer-songwriter Tom Walker, who performed his Christmas song “For Those Who Can’t Be Here.” Organisers this year selected a theme celebrating the “power of love and togetherness” to honour individuals across the country who contribute meaningfully to society. Catherine reportedly wanted the duet to underscore the importance of human connections, emphasizing the quiet generosity and compassion people extend without expecting acknowledgment. In a letter accompanying the order of service, Catherine wrote, “The time, care and compassion you give, often quietly and unspoken, and without any expectation or recognition, make an extraordinary difference to the lives of others.”

Besides the duet, the carol service brought together around 1,600 guests, including royals, celebrities, and local heroes, blending traditional and contemporary elements to be inclusive of diverse faiths and beliefs. Actors such as Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor read poetry, while musical performances were delivered by artists like Katie Melua, Dan Smith, and Zac Abel. Additionally, the Prince of Wales contributed a Bible reading from the pulpit. Princess Charlotte attended the service alongside her brothers, Prince George and Prince Louis, adding a family aspect to the event’s atmosphere
