British boy, 13, fatally stabbed in central Portugal

A 13-year-old boy identified locally as British national Alfie Hallett was tragically killed in central Portugal on Tuesday. The incident occurred in the parish of Casais in Tomar, where the boy was discovered with multiple injuries inflicted by a bladed weapon. Authorities responded to the scene amid a distressing situation involving another individual connected to the case.

Portuguese police revealed that a suspect was found with injuries similar to those of Alfie and subsequently died in what is believed to be a gas explosion. This event also caused harm to one of the officers from the National Republican Guard (GNR) who were present at the scene. The UK Foreign Office confirmed it is maintaining contact with local officials following the incident in Portugal to provide assistance and gather further information.

Alfie’s basketball team, Sport Club Operario Cem Soldos (SCOCS), expressed their sorrow in a heartfelt message shared on Facebook. They described the loss as deeply felt within the club and remembered Alfie for his impressive performance in what turned out to be his final game just days before his death. The club emphasized their affection for Alfie and assured that he would remain in their hearts, ending the tribute with a wish for him to rest in peace.

Authorities also reported that the boy’s mother was found by police exhibiting signs of having been restrained and assaulted. She was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Officials disclosed that the alleged perpetrator had a prior conviction for aggravated homicide, and the family had been under observation following domestic violence incidents recorded in 2022 and 2023. Media reports noted that both mother and child were British, while the suspect was Portuguese. The ongoing investigation is being conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department of Leiria
