Peebles woman crushed by cows near Newtonmore feared for her life

A 61-year-old experienced hillwalker from Peebles, Mary-Jane Parker, considers herself fortunate to be alive after a frightening encounter with cattle in the Scottish Highlands. While attempting to climb three Munros near Newtonmore in August, she was suddenly attacked by a herd of cows. The animals crushed, dragged, and trampled her, leaving her fearing for her life. Thankfully, Mary-Jane had activated an emergency tracking device, leading to a rescue flight to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary by Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA). Reflecting on the incident, she described her survival as miraculous.

Mary-Jane explained that she is generally cautious and respectful of cattle when walking in open country. However, on this occasion, the cattle were concealed behind a bank of high ground, and she stumbled upon them unexpectedly.
