Liverpool City Council has received official approval from the Department for Education allowing a proposed new girls’ school in Liverpool to advance to the next phase of development. The council had submitted a site proposal earlier this year, in July, and has now been informed by government ministers that the project can proceed.
The planned school will be situated on land bordered by Mulgrave Street and Selborne Street in the L8 area of Liverpool. This initiative emerges partly in response to a demand from Muslim families who currently have limited options for faith-based secondary education for their daughters. The council’s case for the school was bolstered during discussions between Liverpool City Council Leader Liam Robinson and the Minister for Schools, Georgia Gould, resulting in this critical endorsement.
Eden Girls’ Leadership Academy will be an 800-place secondary school catering to girls aged 11 to 18. While the school will have a Muslim faith designation, it will be inclusive, welcoming applications from students of all faiths and none. Management of the academy will be undertaken by Star Academies, a multi-academy trust (MAT) that operates a wide-ranging network of primary and secondary schools across the country. During its inaugural year, the school plans to admit 120 Year 7 pupils, continuing to accept new Year 7 intakes annually thereafter. Details about the official opening date will be shared in the future.
The approved plans ensure that the land next to the nearby African Caribbean Centre will remain unaffected, while still providing an adequate site for the school’s construction. Commenting on the progress, Cllr Liam Robinson expressed enthusiasm, saying, “We’re absolutely delighted that the Department for Education has committed to delivering the Eden Girls’ Leadership Academy in Liverpool 8… This marks a real milestone in a project that is set to bring a much-needed school that will provide an excellent secondary education for Liverpool girls.” Other local officials have voiced support as well, emphasizing the benefits the academy will bring to the community and highlighting the importance of faith-based educational choices in Liverpool’s diverse cultural landscape
