As Liverpool households prepare for the festive celebrations this week, some residents are already considering the post-holiday tidying that will follow in the new year. To assist with the proper disposal of Christmas trees, Liverpool City Council will once again provide multiple recycling sites throughout the city. These locations are set up to encourage residents to recycle their real Christmas trees responsibly.

From Friday, January 2, through to Friday, January 23, people with natural Christmas trees will be able to drop them off at any of 13 designated points across Liverpool. These official drop-off sites include areas such as Stanley Park on Priory Road, Everton Park’s Viewing Platform on Netherfield Road North, and several spots in Calderstones Park among others. Clear signage will be available at each location to guide residents when they arrive.

If preferred, residents can also visit local recycling centres located in Old Swan and Otterspool to recycle their trees. This flexible system aims to make it easy and convenient for everyone to participate. Last year alone, the initiative resulted in the recycling of 70 tonnes of Christmas trees, which is comparable in volume to nearly 1.3 million mince pies.

Once collected, the Christmas trees are processed in a way similar to home composting. Micro-organisms break down the trees, transforming them into nutrient-rich compost. This compost is then used in agriculture, thus giving the trees a renewed purpose beyond the holiday season
