Pam Duncan-Glancy: Labour MSP to quit Holyrood over links to sex offender

Scottish Labour MSP Pam Duncan-Glancy has announced that she will not be standing for re-election to the Scottish Parliament next year. The decision comes amid concerns that her friendship with Sean Morton, a convicted sex offender, could overshadow her political work and serve as a distraction.

Earlier this month, Duncan-Glancy stepped down from her role as the party’s education spokeswoman. She acknowledged having made a “serious error of judgement” in maintaining contact with Morton, who was previously a Labour councillor. Morton was convicted in 2017 for possession of indecent child images and extreme pornography. Despite her resignation from the spokesperson position, Labour initially expressed support for her decision at the time and regarded the matter as resolved.

Duncan-Glancy, elected as an MSP for the Glasgow region in 2021, had been chosen as the candidate to contest a Glasgow seat in the upcoming election. However, she revealed in a statement that she had decided to withdraw from the candidacy. Explaining her reasons, she said, “While this has obviously been a very difficult decision – and it is the greatest honour of my life to represent Glasgow – I do not wish for a personal friendship to become a distraction.” She expressed gratitude for the chance to serve and reiterated her commitment to helping secure a Scottish Labour government next year.

Sean Morton, who formerly served as a councillor for Fochabers Lhanbryde, was ordered to undertake unpaid community work and placed on the sex offenders register after pleading guilty to two counts of possessing indecent images of children. Morton has stated that he received the images anonymously. A spokesperson for Scottish Labour confirmed Duncan-Glancy’s withdrawal from the parliamentary candidacy for the Glasgow Kelvin and Maryhill constituency, emphasizing her wish to avoid distracting attention from the party’s focus and work. As a result, the candidate selection process will be reopened to find a replacement
