Rob Pope, a devoted AC/DC enthusiast from Liverpool, embarked on an extraordinary ultramarathon across Australia while dressed as the band’s iconic guitarist Angus Young. His run spanned from Melbourne to Brisbane, coinciding with the start and finish of AC/DC’s Australian tour. Prior to beginning this ambitious challenge, Mr. Pope had the unique opportunity to meet the band, who pledged to contribute proceeds from inflatable guitar sales at their concerts to his fundraising efforts.
Over the course of his journey, Rob covered an impressive 1,200 miles (1,930 km) while pushing a specially designed three-wheeled stroller named Rosie, inspired by the AC/DC song “Whole Lotta Rosie.” He maintained a rigorous pace, running approximately 45 miles (72 km) daily. The funds raised were earmarked for three charities: the NSPCC, WWF, and Australia’s The Smith Family, reflecting his dedication to a range of important causes.
Reflecting on the physical and mental demands of the ultramarathon, Mr. Pope described the challenges he faced, from enduring intense 90-degree heat and getting lost in forests, to navigating bushfires and long, isolated stretches of road. Despite these hardships, he also experienced remarkable moments, including watching sunrises over the ocean, encountering a deadly brown snake, socializing with local bikers, running across the Sydney Harbour Bridge with views of the Opera House, and even rescuing a goat trapped in a fence. “It’s been such an incredible journey across Australia, and meeting AC/DC was a brilliant way to begin my run,” he said.
The NSPCC expressed pride in Rob Pope’s efforts, with Janette Drew, the charity’s fundraising manager for the North West, calling him “not only a local hero in Liverpool, but right across the NSPCC.” She praised the feat as a “serious undertaking any athlete would struggle with” and emphasized their appreciation for his determination. Similarly, WWF highlighted Rob’s “remarkable dedication and resilience,” acknowledging his innovative approach to raising awareness and funds. They expressed gratitude to all supporters of his campaign, which contributes to protecting wildlife and habitats worldwide
