An appeal has been issued to all MI5 personnel seeking any information related to the provision of false evidence by the agency in a case involving a neo-Nazi informant. The false testimony given to three courts has prompted an investigation led by the Investigatory Powers Commissioner, Sir Brian Leveson, focused on how MI5 made inaccurate statements regarding its communications with the BBC. Sir Brian expressed his surprise at the discovery of new evidence so long after the case’s inception.
This inquiry was launched following Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s directive in September, which came in response to revelations by the BBC that MI5 had deliberately misled judicial bodies. Both the High Court and the Investigatory Powers Tribunal rejected MI5’s prior explanations regarding the circumstances.
