This year’s Christmas dinner is set to cost shoppers slightly more, mainly due to increases in the prices of turkey and Brussels sprouts. Research conducted for the BBC indicates that a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings will run around £32.45, marking a rise of nearly 4% compared to last year. Several factors have contributed to this increase, notably bird flu outbreaks which forced the early culling of many turkeys, and a drier spring and summer that negatively impacted sprout harvests.
The price of a standard 10lb frozen turkey has jumped to £20, up from £18.62 last year, representing a 7.37% increase. Brussels sprouts have seen their cost rise by more than 9%, now retailing at 94p a bag. This data, collected on December 6, 2025, comes from major supermarkets across the UK including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons, Aldi, and Lidl. Despite these rises, supermarkets still often offer deals, especially on vegetables, with some bags discounted to as low as 8p, giving consumers the chance to find bargains amid general price increases.
Farmers have faced significant challenges this year, especially due to bird flu. For example, in Potterspury near Milton Keynes, free-range turkey farming has been disrupted by government measures requiring birds to be kept indoors, leading to increased feeding costs since turkeys can’t forage naturally. Farmer Susan Gorst explains that these additional costs have to be passed on to customers, who seem to have come to expect year-on-year price increases. Meanwhile, butchers also report consistent rises in meat prices throughout the year, with pork prices going up as well, impacting popular Christmas items like pigs in blankets.
Despite the increases in some festive fare, there are signs that food price rises, in general, are beginning to slow down following sharp spikes seen since 2022. Items like potatoes, parsnips, Christmas pudding, and mince pies have, in some cases, decreased in price compared to last year. This gradual easing of inflationary pressures may help households as they prepare for the holiday season and look to enjoy traditional meals without as severe an impact on their budgets as in recent years
