Nefyn landslip hits properties and closes coastal clifftop path

A substantial landslip has caused damage to several beachfront properties and has led to warnings for those walking along nearby coastal paths. According to council authorities, there is an ongoing risk of further earth movements due to continued water flow down the slope of private land located in Nefyn on the Llyn Peninsula.

Cyngor Gwynedd confirmed that some private homes have been impacted, but fortunately, no one was inside when the landslip occurred. The chairwoman of Nefyn town council, Mared Llywelyn, reported that the floors of certain buildings have collapsed, raising concerns among the local community. This incident follows a series of recent landslips that have also affected public pathways in the area over the past week.

“These landslides are happening more frequently now,” Llywelyn noted, reflecting on environmental changes. She highlighted that last year’s extreme storms and this year’s increasing rainfall have contributed to the situation worsening. One of the affected routes—a path connecting Nefyn with Morfa Nefyn, which was previously widened and resurfaced—has been closed after part of it was lost to a landslip.

Officials from Cyngor Gwynedd conducted an inspection of the site on Friday and have notified the Coastguard about the event. As a safety measure, a portion of the coastline adjacent to the landslip has been cordoned off. The council has urged the public to exercise caution when walking near cliff edges or along the coast, especially as the land remains vulnerable to slippage after extended periods of heavy rain. Mared Llywelyn further stressed the need to seriously consider the future of coastal paths amid the ongoing climate emergency
