Driver who ran over people on Christmas Day convicted of murder

On Christmas Day in London’s West End, a violent incident unfolded involving a driver who fatally injured one man and harmed several others in a drink-fuelled outburst. Anthony Gilheaney, aged 31, was found guilty at the Old Bailey of the murder of 25-year-old Aidan Chapman, as well as attempting to murder two other men during the early morning attacks on 25 December 2024.

Mr Chapman sustained devastating head injuries during the incident and succumbed to them in hospital on New Year’s Eve. Gilheaney, who hails from Harlow in Essex, was also convicted of wounding with intent and causing grievous bodily harm, though he was acquitted of attempting to murder a third individual. The case revealed a series of violent acts carried out by Gilheaney following a night of drinking with friends at Bar Rumba on Shaftesbury Avenue in central London.
