The UK government has officially appointed Christian Turner as the new ambassador to the United States, according to a confirmation from Downing Street. Turner, a career diplomat with nearly three decades of service across Whitehall and the Foreign Office, is stepping into the role following the dismissal of the former ambassador, Peter Mandelson. Mandelson was removed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer after revelations surfaced linking him to the late paedophile Jeffrey Epstein, through emails and photographs that demonstrated their ongoing association.
Turner’s appointment was formally sanctioned by King Charles, and the UK is now in the process of seeking the necessary approval—known as agrément—from the US government for Turner to assume his post in Washington. Turner expressed his honor at being nominated, highlighting the significance of the “pivotal time for the transatlantic relationship” and his eagerness to collaborate with the Trump administration, as well as leaders across Congress, business, and society, to strengthen ties between the two nations.
As the new ambassador, Turner faces a challenging agenda, with one of the key priorities being efforts to cooperate with the US in addressing President Donald Trump’s push to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. This approach has caused some tension, particularly among European countries that fear a premature resolution might undermine their long-term interests. A US national security strategy document signed by Trump recently described Europe as facing “civilisational erasure” and questioned the reliability of certain European allies, adding further complexity to Turner’s diplomatic mission.
Additionally, Turner will be tasked with advancing a delayed technology agreement with the US, even as concerns persist within parts of the White House and US Congress about the UK’s online safety laws. Critics have characterized these regulations as forms of “censorship” and legal overreach that could negatively impact American companies. Turner’s appointment comes amid efforts by Starmer’s government to maintain a close relationship with the US, exemplified by Trump’s second state visit to the UK in September—an event during which Trump praised the “unbreakable bond” shared by the two countries. Turner’s extensive background includes roles such as political director at the Foreign Office, British High Commissioner to Pakistan, and Director for the Middle East and North Africa. He also served as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister and has experience in television documentary production.
Both Prime Minister Starmer and Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper have voiced strong support for Turner, emphasizing his exceptional diplomatic experience and the importance of the UK-US alliance. The ambassador to the US role is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious positions within the UK diplomatic service
