A tragic case from Scotland has brought attention to the dangers of social media, as a family takes legal action against Instagram’s parent company, Meta. The teenage son of a couple from Dunblane, Murray Dowey, tragically died by suicide after falling victim to sextortion on the platform in December 2023. This lawsuit is believed to be the first of its kind in the UK, targeting the social media giant for failing to provide a safe environment.
At just 16 years old, Murray became a target of blackmail on Instagram, leading to devastating consequences for both him and his family. In response, his parents have initiated legal proceedings in a US court. They are seeking punitive damages, arguing that Instagram did not protect their son from harm and that the platform’s safety measures were inadequate.
Ros Dowey, Murray’s mother, has emphasized the importance of parents engaging in difficult but necessary conversations with their children about the risks they face online. She believes open dialogue could help prevent similar outcomes for other families.
Meanwhile, Meta, which also owns Facebook, has stated that it actively supports law enforcement efforts to combat sextortion. The company noted, “we continue to fight them on our apps on multiple fronts,” highlighting its ongoing commitment to addressing this serious issue
