First Minister John Swinney has condemned recent claims that a staff member secretly recorded an SNP MSP they once worked for, describing such actions as “completely and utterly unacceptable.” According to a report in The Scotsman, a former employee allegedly planted listening devices in the office of an unnamed politician during late 2023.
BBC Scotland News has learned that the individual involved is no longer employed by an elected representative but holds a position as an office bearer within a local branch of the SNP. Both the Scottish Parliament and the SNP have emphasized that MSPs bear responsibility for managing their own staffing matters.
When questioned about the incident after First Minister’s Questions, Swinney stated, “I’m not familiar with all of the details… but that type of conduct is completely and utterly unacceptable. Individuals are entitled to operate in an open and transparent environment and shouldn’t be subjected to that kind of behaviour.” His remarks highlighted the importance of a workplace free from fear or intimidation.
The issue was reportedly raised with Presiding Officer Alison Johnstone. A spokesman for the Scottish Parliament confirmed that MSPs are accountable as employers for handling staff and any related disputes. Meanwhile, an SNP spokesperson clarified the party’s position, saying, “The SNP has no involvement in the employment processes of parliamentarians.
