Nigel Farage will not face an investigation regarding allegations that Reform UK exceeded spending limits during his 2024 general election campaign. Essex Police stated they are unable to proceed with any inquiry into the matter because more than a year has passed since the purported offence took place.
The issue arose after a former member of Farage’s campaign team, Richard Everett, claimed that Reform UK’s spending went beyond the legal cap of £20,660. Everett contended that the party did not report expenses related to certain leaflets, banners, utility bills, and the renovation of a bar used as the Clacton constituency office. While initial documentation was presented to the Metropolitan Police, the case was subsequently transferred to Essex Police for further review.
A police spokeswoman explained that according to the Representation of the People Act 1983, any prosecutions concerning such spending violations must be started within one year of the alleged offence. She noted that an allegation about misreported election expenditure was raised in July 2024 but formally reported on 5 December, which exceeded this statutory time limit. As a result, Essex Police confirmed that no investigation could be initiated under the law.
Despite the police’s decision, Farage remains potentially subject to scrutiny from the Electoral Commission. Farage became Reform UK’s leader in June 2024, about a month before the general election. Subsequently, he won the parliamentary seat of Clacton in Essex from the Conservative Party with a majority exceeding 8,000 votes. Reform UK has been approached for comment on the situation
