Ieuan Crump jailed for sex assaults on Grange Hospital patients

A healthcare support worker has been sentenced to nine years in prison after sexually assaulting two female patients during his employment at a hospital. Ieuan Crump, aged 27, was convicted last month at Merthyr Crown Court on multiple charges, including six counts of sexual assault and three counts of assault by penetration. The offenses occurred while he was conducting examinations at the Grange Hospital in Cwmbran, where he carried out unnecessary and fake medical procedures for his own sexual gratification.

The court heard that the assaults took place on August 10 and 13, 2021, when both victims had come to the hospital seeking relief from pain. Crump conducted intimate examinations that were not medically required and assaulted the women during these interactions. One of the victims shared that the trauma led her to attempt suicide three times, describing the lasting impact on her life as a “nightmare.” In her victim impact statement, she said that the experience destroyed her trust in medical professionals and caused her to isolate herself, severely affecting her ability to work and leave her home.

The second victim disclosed that she had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following the assaults. She expressed in her statement how the abuse from a healthcare worker shattered her trust and made her fearful of men in general. The judge presiding over the case, Vanessa Francis, remarked on Crump’s behavior, characterizing him as socially isolated yet arrogant and confident. She emphasized the severity of his betrayal of trust, noting that he deliberately avoided wearing gloves to ensure direct skin contact during the unwarranted examinations. The judge imposed a life-long placement on the sex offenders register, restraining orders regarding the victims, and a ban on working with children and vulnerable individuals.

Representatives from Aneurin Bevan University Health Board stated that thorough police and employment checks, including enhanced DBS screening, were conducted before Crump’s hiring in line with NHS standards, and no previous concerns about his conduct were flagged. The Health Board confirmed that support was promptly offered to the victims after the allegations came to light and that ongoing assistance is available following the court proceedings. They issued a statement expressing sympathy for the victims and reaffirmed their commitment to zero tolerance for inappropriate behavior by staff or patients, promising continued collaboration with law enforcement to ensure accountability
