The family of Dáithí, a young boy who played a significant role in changing organ donation regulations in Northern Ireland, is heartbroken after their car was stolen from their home in west Belfast. Máirtín Mac Gabhann, Dáithí’s father, shared with BBC News NI that the vehicle contained several valuable items, including Dáithí’s essential wheelchair and Christmas presents. The burglary occurred at their residence on Whitecliff Crescent.
Fortunately, the police have made progress in the investigation. Three individuals have been detained in connection with the theft, and the stolen car was found at a shopping centre located on the Falls Road. Despite the distressing incident, Mr Mac Gabhann and his family are striving to maintain a festive spirit for their two sons and not allow the situation to dampen their Christmas celebrations.
Upon discovering the car was missing, Mr Mac Gabhann initially thought it was a prank by someone he knew. However, CCTV footage from neighbors confirmed that the vehicle was taken around 03:50 GMT. The wheelchair taken with the car is indispensable to Dáithí, as he depends on it for daily activities such as attending school and leaving the house. Reflecting on the ordeal, Mr Mac Gabhann expressed his disbelief but also gratitude for the local community’s strong support during this difficult time.
The theft had additional personal consequences, as Mr Mac Gabhann missed his son’s Christmas school performance, which he finds deeply upsetting. After the recovery of the car by police, Mr Mac Gabhann was present at the scene and described his feelings towards those involved, saying, “I managed to look one of the people arrested in the eye and I’m not carrying any anger towards them, I hope those that did this can find a better path in life.” Some stolen items, including the wheelchair, have been retrieved. He also mentioned a games console was stolen but suspects tried to pawn it after the vehicle was taken. Police confirmed the arrests and noted that some damage occurred during their efforts to stop the stolen vehicle
