Timeline: Paul Doyle's journey to causing Liverpool parade horror

Paul Doyle’s violent outburst during the Liverpool FC Premier League victory parade on 26 May has been described by the sentencing judge as “incomprehensible,” with the reasons behind his sudden aggression remaining unclear. Despite the celebratory atmosphere and crowds blocking roads, the 54-year-old’s reaction was disproportionate, leading to a tragic series of events that have left many injured. Now serving a 21-year-and-six-month sentence after pleading guilty to 31 offences—including dangerous driving, affray, and causing grievous bodily harm with intent—Doyle’s escalating hostility unfolded over the course of one afternoon.

The day began at 12:34 BST when Doyle’s friend, Dave Clark, along with his family, arrived at Doyle’s home in Croxteth, Liverpool. Although Doyle is an Everton fan, he agreed to drive the Clark family, who support Liverpool, into the city centre to watch the parade. Their initial journey was calm and uneventful, with conversations covering topics such as house prices, schools, football, cars, and their shared work in IT. Upon reaching Exchange Street East, Doyle dropped off his passengers, driving calmly and adhering to traffic rules.

However, after returning home at 13:35, the court heard that Doyle’s driving became far more aggressive, involving risky lane changes and overtaking other vehicles. The parade itself commenced at 14:30 at Allerton Maze, located in southern Liverpool. At 17:24, Doyle messaged Mr. Clark, inquiring how the parade was progressing; Mr. Clark replied that he was on Castle Street near Dale and Water Streets. Doyle then set out from his house at 17:29, instructing his sat-nav to guide him to Castle Street. En route, his driving became increasingly erratic—he overtook multiple cars, ran a red light, and ignored road safety.

When Doyle reached Dale Street at 17:54, he engaged in dangerous driving behavior by cutting across lanes and disregarding pedestrian safety. Despite heavy crowds of fans returning from the waterfront, Doyle accelerated through a red light at Stanley Street. Tensions peaked at 17:58 when a man walking with his child pressed his foot on Doyle’s car bumper to caution him, prompting Doyle to shout, “It’s a [expletive] road.” Ignoring the increasingly alarmed crowd, Doyle honked his horn, shouted obscenities, and continued driving aggressively, causing adults to jump out of his way while children were pulled from danger.

The situation escalated on Water Street when Doyle maneuvered past traffic cones aimed at diverting vehicles from the crowded area. He struck Jack Trotter, a 23-year-old man who tried to evade the car but suffered a leg injury. Doyle then ploughed into groups of people, including Jacqueline McClaren, aged 60, and paramedic Jay Vernon, 34, as well as a 10-year-old girl. At one point, he shouted, “[Expletive] move.” After hitting numerous pedestrians, reversing int
